Why I Support the Living Wage Bill

I'm announcing my support for Council legislation requiring a living wage for employees of large national retailers moving into the District.

We know that the best way to lift families out of poverty is to have low-wage workers earn a living wage. Jobs that don’t pay a living wage cost our city because these workers rely on public assistance for health care, housing and other basic needs. That’s why I support Council passage of the Larger Retailer Accountability Act of 2013.

There are both large and small businesses in our city that pay a living wage, and they should be encouraged to continue these high-road practices. It makes good fiscal sense for large national employers to pay a living wage. It benefits all of us. I call on all other candidates in this race to support a living wage and to support passage of this important bill.
